The Amazing Geology of Santa Barbara: Mt. Calvary Retreat
Date: Saturday, January 19, 2013
Time: 10:00AM - 1:00PM
Instructor: Susie Bartz
Location: Directions will be sent with confirmed reservation
Mt. Calvary Monastery and Retreat House, destroyed in the 2008 Tea Fire, sat high atop a ridge of hard red rock. Our hike up Rattlesnake Canyon to view the site is offered with permission of the owners. We’ll see the extent of huge old alluvial fans that blanket our foothills, and a spectacular view of our coastal landscape. The remains of the monastery –a beautiful wrought-iron cross –– still stand on the old Sespe rocks that record our land’s origin in the Sonoran Desert. Moderate difficulty, 3 miles. Directions will be sent with reservations. Bring water, sturdy shoes, snack, and curiosity.
