Become a certified California Naturalist at SBBG!

The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is partnering with the UCSB Natural Reserve System to offer this innovative UC program. Join a committed corps of volunteer naturalists and citizen scientists ready to take an active role in local natural resource conservation, education, and restoration. Provides the foundational curriculum to become a
Santa Barbara Botanic Garden or UCSB Natural Reserve docent.
Class and field sessions held at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and Sedgwick, Coal Oil Point, and Carpinteria Salt Marsh UC Natural Reserves, and Arroyo Hondo Preserve. Taught by local expert guest speakers, classes provide a broad overview of California Natural History while helping participants to become skilled interpreters, citizen scientists and land stewards of the Santa Barbara region.

An additional 3 week course in 2014 will be required to complete the SBBG Docent Program. Training will include Garden history, horticulture of California native plants, and presentation skills. In addition, prospective SBBG Docents will shadow tours with trained Docents. Opportunities are available for Docents to specialize in certain groups (e.g. school tours) or on certain topics (e.g. horticulture, botany, birds, Garden history, etc.)

Other volunteer opportunities are available, and may require additional training.

Limited to 24 participants
